Hurricane season car prep: the tire checklist you didn't know you needed.

Hurricane season car prep: the tire checklist you didn't know you needed.

Why do tires matter in emergency evacuation situations?

When the sky gets dark and those hurricane alerts start buzzin', your mind's all about getting the house ready, boarding up windows and having a go-bag packed. But, have you even thought about the only thing between your ride and the road when you have to  bounce? Yeah, we're talking about your tires. In an emergency, where every second counts and the weather can get straight up gnarly, having tires you can count on ain't some fancy extra, it's a must. A flat, losing grip, or a blowout can turn a safe bail-out into a sketchy mess. So, knowing your tires and getting them ready before the storm hits is just as key as filling up the gas tank.

Tread depth and wet-weather traction basics.

The tread is that pattern of grooves and blocks on the surface  of the  tire that touches the road. Its main gig, in wet weather tires, is to push water out from under your tire so you stay connected to the road. When your tread wears down, it loses its capacity of   getting rid of water, which increases your chances of "aquaplaning" (that's when your tire loses touch with the road and slides on a layer of water). For the crazy rain during hurricane season, you need some good tread depth. Most tires have wear indicators; if your tread's level with those, it's time for some fresh rubber. Good grip in the wet doesn't just help you get around, it cuts down on how long it takes to stop, which is huge when you can't see squat and the road's slick.

How to check tire pressure before a storm?

This is probably the easiest thing to do and usually the one almost everyone  forgets. Tire pressure messes directly with how your tires perform, how long they last and how safe you are. A tire with the wrong pressure (either too high or too low) doesn't grab the road right, which can mess with your steering, braking, and, most important when it's raining, it's bad at getting rid of water. Before the storm rolls in, use a pressure gauge (make sure your tires are cold) and pump them up to what your car's manufacturer recommends. You can usually find that on the driver's side door frame or in the manual. The right pressure makes sure your tread hits the wet surface just right.

Why do certain patterns perform better in heavy rain?

Not all tires are built to handle water the same way. Some tread patterns are straight up "water wizards":

  • Directional patterns: these have "V" or arrow-shaped grooves that are made to push water out from the middle of the tire super fast. They're awesome at fighting off aquaplaning.

  • Asymmetrical patterns: these mix up different tread designs on the inside and outside of the tire. The inside usually has bigger blocks and grooves for better wet grip and getting rid of water, while the outside is all about dry performance. This makes them really versatile for all kinds of conditions.

  • Deep and wide grooves: no matter the pattern, how deep and wide the grooves are is key. More space means more water gets out of there, which means better contact with the road.

Picking tires with these features will give you a serious advantage when the roads get flooded.
